As the sports community pivoted to skills training and athlete development this year, there are some unique businesses for the athlete in all of us to train, strengthen and get ready for the next level.

Athlete Farm Training, located at 34 Dalkeith Drive in Brantford, is a strength and conditioning facility that works with athletes to help them optimize their athletic potential. It’s a space for athlete improvement but also a training facility for the “Everyday Athlete” to create and succeed with their own personal workout plan. This 8,000 sq ft facility has been owned and operated for the past five years by husband and wife team Luke and Taylor VanMoerkerke.

Taylor’s sport background is in lacrosse where she was named to Canada’s U19 team, had a successful college career at Virginia Tech, attended UOIT in Oshawa where she was awarded the Most Valuable Offensive Player in the league as well as UOIT Female Varsity Athlete of the Year. Recently, Taylor has been coaching the offense of the Western Mustangs women's lacrosse program.

Luke was a hockey player that grew up on a farm in Tillsonburg and played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League then UOIT in Oshawa where he played five seasons of Canadian University Hockey. But it’s his indelible connection to Brantford that brought them here to open an athlete focused training facility. He was a member of the Brantford Golden Eagles, which won the Sutherland Cup provincial junior B hockey championship in 2009. The team will be inducted into the Brantford and Area Sports Hall of Recognition for 2020.

Athlete Farm Training works with many coaches and local athletes to help elevate their conditioning and skill levels. Counting amongst its members that they have trained are athletes from: Brant and District Football Club (Brantford Bisons), Brantford Girls Hockey Association, Brantford Minor Hockey Association, Brantford Aquatic Club, Brantford Harlequins Rugby Football Club, Red Sox Baseball, Brantford City Soccer Club and Brantford Galaxy Youth Soccer Club. With workouts that are tailored to the athlete’s specific needs, it’s a great way to take them to the next level both during the season and off-season.

The facility has incorporate many safety measures to ensure the health and safety of its members and coaches including: temperature checks and contact tracing upon entry, social distancing of attendees, masks for coaches, hand sanitizer and wipes throughout the space and coaches wipe down and clean after sessions.
