August’s Featured Artist is Justyna Z, a scroll saw artist from Brantford. Justyna launched her business, Lush Lemon Co., in 2016 after discovering – and falling in love with – a scroll saw. Since then, creating beautifully unique 3D signs has become her full-time passion.
Justyna admits that she’s always had a creative brain first. Her resume includes work in painting, macramé, sculptures and photography. “I remember being young and, instead of asking for Barbies or LEGO, I would ask for the largest paint and art set.” She attributes her creativity to her mom, who has always been an inspiration to her. “She always encouraged any crazy, artistic ideas that I had, even if it meant getting some paint on the floor. Sorry, Mom!”
Starting her artistic career with wedding photography, Justyna slowly added painted signage for those weddings onto her list. Painted wedding signs then turned into making those signs 3D with a scroll saw, and she’s never looked back (except for when she’s trolling her own social media accounts looking for inspiration!). “It’s amazing to look back on my pieces from where I have started to what I am making now. My Facebook and Instagram are like a time capsule, my 3D signs started as simple letters and quotes and now I am creating intimate floral work and watercolour designs. That gets me excited about what’s to come next!”
Lush Lemon Co. offers a wide variety of pieces to choose from including Rounds & Growth Charts in varying sizes. Hanging signs on children’s bedroom doors have become a trend in Brantford, thanks to Justyna. The coolest feature of the Lush Lemon Co. website is being able to create your own custom pieces, with Justyna’s trained eye, of course. Justyna’s tools of choice include a: scroll saw, spray paint, and rotary tool. She has aspirations to grow her business and develop her skills even further by adding pottery to the mix. She loves the work being done by locals at the Brantford Potters’ Guild and also admires the painting and woodworking art created by Jenn from Rustic Feather. Rustic Feather has a gorgeous barn in Norfolk and also sells locally out of Brantford Finders Keepers.
A lover of creating “anything pretty,” Justyna says what she loves most about her creative projects is “just being able to turn up my music and lose myself in my art. There is definitely something therapeutic to it.” When asked what tips she has for developing artists, she says, “Never pass up an opportunity to be inspired. You don’t just have to be inspired by other artists. You can find beauty and ideas for your art in your family, walks by the Grand River, day trips to the beach, and more.” Justyna, who enjoys daily long walks and bike rides on Brantford’s beautiful trail system, says “living by the river is like paradise to me.”
