It’s hot outside, and we’re craving fresh ingredients with a bit zip of tang and Thai-ny bit of spice. Puns aside, Brantford has incredible Thai restaurants that we’d love for you to add to your takeout rotation. The servings are always generous, the food is always fresh and tasty, and if you’re like us, you probably don’t have all the amazing ingredients to make a comparable Thai dish at home.
If you love Thai food, you’re likely a Pad Thai afficianado, but did you know that this dish is not the traditional, authentic dish we may think it is? There are multiple stories that explain its history, but the uniting theme is that the dish was created in the mid-20th century to celebrate national pride. Today, Pad Thai is one of Thailand’s national dishes, and typically contains rice noodles stir fried with eggs, firm tofu (or animal protein), chopped roasted peanuts, and a sauce flavoured with tamarind pulp, fish sauce, garlic, red chili pepper, all topped off with a squeeze of fresh lime. There is no single Pad Thai recipe, which means you pretty much have to sample the dish at every Thai restaurant you encounter.
We’ve rounded up three of our favourite Brantford Thai restaurants, and challenge you to try them all out this summer:
My-Thai Brantford | 393 St. Paul Avenue | 519-751-8374
Experience the exquisite taste of Thai at one of Brantford’s most popular and locally-loved restaurants. Their menu is extensive and features dishes like Spicy Papaya Salad with Grilled Chicken ($15); Mango Chicken with snow peas, carrots, and sweet peppers in a homemade garlic chili sauce ($13.25); and Massaman Curry, an ancient curry that was once popular with the Thai royal family, and includes rich coconut milk, bay leaves, potatoes, and cashews ($14). My-Thai is currently offering takeout and delivery.
Nine North | 86 Dalhousie Street | 519-304-7090
One of downtown Brantford’s most popular new restaurants, Nine North, focuses on delivering vibrant Vietnamese and Thai food with fresh herbs and local vegetables. Their menu offers numerous gluten-friendly and vegetarian options, and dishes can be customized to your preference. We love their fresh shrimp rolls with indulgent peanut dipping sauce ($4.99); their “Create your own Pho” – a complex broth with three of your choice of protein ($10.99/$12.99); and their Vermicelli Combo with your choice of protein, topped with fresh lettuce, mint, cucumber, and a sprinkle of peanuts ($11.99). Nine North is offering takeout and delivery; delivery is free for orders in Brantford over $75 before tax.
Sai Thai Kitchen | 250 King George Road | 519-758-0752
This locally owned and operated restaurant opened in 2018, and it’s got a local following that can’t get enough of their fresh take on Thai comfort food. Their Apple Salad, featuring shredded Granny Smith apples, carrots, peanuts, cashews and crispy onions ($7.45) is a delish appetizer! Browse their entire menu online and choose entrees like: Mee Khob with crunchy noodles, stir fried vegetables, and your choice of protein ($10.95-14.95), or their own take on China’s popular General Tso Chicken – General Thai Chicken, which includes delicious crispy chicken, red and green peppers, and onion ($12.45). Sai Thai is offering takeout and delivery.
