The City of Brantford Economic Development and Tourism Department is pleased to announce the upcoming virtual premiere and free live stream of The Cuban, a motion picture that was filmed in Brantford and the County of Brant in 2018. The virtual event will take place on October 30, 2020 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The City of Brantford intended to welcome the cast and crew back to our city, with a red carpet event at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and the City of Brantford’s ongoing efforts to limit the spread of the virus in our community, staff has decided to offer a free livestream of the film and Q&A for up to 500 households in Brantford and the County of Brant.

Electronic tickets are available via the Eventive platform now. The tickets are free and allow attendees access to the live streaming of the film (running time 109 minutes) immediately followed by a live, interactive Q&A with the cast and crew. The Q&A will be co-moderated by one of the associate producers of the film and lifelong Brantford resident, Olga Consorti along with Paul Golini, Co-Founder of Empire Communities and Executive Producer of The Cuban.

The Cuban tells a story of an unexpected friendship that forms between a naïve pre-med student and an aging Cuban musician and how he ignites her passion for music and life. Directed by Sergio Navarretta and written by Alessandra Piccione, The Cuban stars Ana Golja, Oscar and Emmy award winner Louis Gossett Jr. and Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Shohreh Aghdashloo. The film was produced by Piccione and Navarretta of S.N.A.P. Films Inc., alongside Golja and Taras Koltun.

Filmed in Cuba and in various locations across the City of Brantford and County of Brant, cast and crew from The Cuban are delighted to provide our residents with this unique opportunity in advance of the film’s Canadian release on November 6, 2020.

“We absolutely loved filming in Brantford and it felt like a home away from home for a lot of the cast and crew who had to stay on site for the entire time,” said Sergio Navarretta, award-winning director of The Cuban. “The residents of Brantford were so warm and welcoming and we really appreciated their hospitality.”

“The Cuban was a large production for us and the community was really invested in it, so we are excited to share this feature with our residents and showcase Brantford on the big screen,” says Kara Davey, Arts & Culture Development Officer for the City of Brantford.

Davey, alongside Kevin Dekok, Economic Development Officer, oversee the City of Brantford’s ever-expanding film portfolio and are very enthusiastic about the opportunities that the film industry brings to Brantford.

“Brantford is becoming increasingly film-friendly and it’s attracting a lot of attention from production companies. Our unique natural assets, beautiful neighbourhoods and historical buildings are generating a lot of interest and our exceptional customer service is what brings these production companies back,” adds Davey.

“Filming in both our municipalities has really taken off and The Cuban production highlights some of what makes Brantford and the County of Brant such an ideal film destination. We share unique assets and we each have our own unique assets. When a production knows all they need is found right here, it saves them costs while increasing the economic benefit to our two communities. It’s a win-win-win. Working with The Cuban team and our colleagues in the City resulted in a spectacular experience for us and an excellent film,” says Russell Press, Director of Economic Development & Tourism for the County of Brant.
