November’s Featured Artists are husband and wife duo, Brian and Kelly Sloat of AIM Dance, who specialize in ballroom, Latin, wedding and fitness dance lessons.
Brian and Kelly met on the dance floor and have been sharing their passion with people ever since. Their goal is to teach people to have fun learning to dance, and acquire the skills to dance for a lifetime. Their studio space has been a place of community where dancers can better connect with their partners, family, and friends and get away from the stress of everyday life.
Kelly grew up dancing at family functions and started her journey of ballroom/latin dancing as a teenager. Brian started in 1997, when his sister began taking lessons. Together, their common goal is to make dancing accessible for as many people as possible. “We enjoy performing in the community and, with word of mouth, the studio has grown. We have a wonderful group of individuals from all walks of life with a common thread to partake in an activity that is fun, keeps you active and most importantly connects us all together,” says the couple.
The AIM Dance family includes a dedicated group of instructors that offer a variety of rhythm based options for people just starting out in their learning to seasoned dancers. Over the years, this dance family has been given the chance to get involved in many different community fundraisers and been included in dance demonstrations and longstanding community events such as the Brantford International Villages Festival.
Their studio continues to grow to include group classes, fitness classes, private lessons and even wedding 1st dance choreography. Brian and Kelly said “a good pair of dance shoes and or running shoes” is all you need. The couple loves to watch people grow from their first dance lesson. “It’s satisfying to know that when our dedicated dancers go to a wedding or on vacation that they can navigate the dance floor and inspire others too,” they explain.
Brian and Kelly acknowledge that their family has continued to be very supportive over the years. They add, “Countless students have spread the word about AIM and been a constant part of our lives in and outside the studio. Our friend and photographer Robert Yourth (@bnphotogeek) has captured so many amazing moments on the dance floor. We’re very blessed to be surrounded by so many good people on a daily basis.”
When asked what about Brantford they enjoy most, Brian and Kelly said, “We love the Sanderson Centre best because of the amazing artists and performances that they bring in season after season. And of course the building itself is so beautiful.”
