Glenhyrst Art Gallery is calling for proposals to create a sculpture to commemorate the Walter Gretzky parking spot at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre. The selected artist(s) will be awarded $10,000 (including HST, if applicable) and the sculpture will become the property of The Corporation of the City of Brantford.
This is an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their skills and contribute to the growing public art collection of the city. The selection process will involve a partner-led jury, with written statements of approach, qualifications, and historical documentation. The artist selection process will be managed by Glenhyrst, and it will follow the procurement processes and rules of the gallery.
Walter Gretzky, father of ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, is best known for his contributions to minor hockey in Canada, and his dedication to helping many local, provincial, and national charities. This sculpture is a thank you and acknowledgment of his deep dedication to minor sports in Brantford as well as his contribution to local charities and interests. The sculpture will be created utilizing the many sticks left behind on the parking spot when he passed.
The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 5 pm. Interested artists are encouraged to read the call for artists in full before completing the application. The details about the call for artists and the online submission process can be found at www.glenhyrst.ca.
