Kayanase-Blog

Kayanase is a greenhouse, ecological restoration and eco-tourism company specializing in traditional ecological knowledge and native plant species. The company, located at 993 Highway 54 in Ohsweken, is continually growing to accurately and appropriately represent the history and culture of the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse) while providing cultural, social, educational and economic benefits to the community of Six Nations and beyond.

Their mission is to restore the health and beauty of Mother Earth using scientific and traditional methods to improve ecosystems; they believe that all of the work they do – from helping clients create ecologically sustainable landscapes to environmental awareness – will benefit Mother Hearth as a whole, enriching the lives of all of the people, plants and animals that depend on her.

At the hearth of the site is a 17th century replica Iroquoian Longhouse (“Ganohsa’oweh” or “original house”), which is open to residents and visitors to explore and learn about Six Nations’ natural resources, society, history and culture. While it has been many centuries since the Haudenosaunee lived in bark-covered longhouses, the space acts as a sharing place where the stories, crafts and games of the Haudenosaunee come alive for the next generation.

The site also features a 55,000 square foot greenhouse. In this space, they collect native seeds, then process, propagate and plant to encourage healthful biodiversity.

Kayanase offers a number of services, including school and adult group tours, workshops, and traditional skill activities. Tours are available through pre-arranged booking and can include an activity.

Kayanase is located at 993 Highway 54 in Ohsweken on the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve, which is a short drive from Brantford. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm.
