Meet The Scientist Behind Joosie Sweets Donuts

Jess, a recent graduate in biochemistry and forensics, is the woman behind Joosie Sweets Donuts (pronounced “juicy”) – a fully licensed and Brant County Health Unit certified home-based business in Brantford! Celebrate National Donut Day on June 4 by placing an order for these delicious, gourmet donuts.

After graduating in the midst of the pandemic, Jess was home and found that she had extra time to focus on one of her favourite hobbies – baking! In May 2020, she decided to start making donuts as a “side hustle” to keep her busy and began baking test batches of donuts for friends. Her dad used to be a chef, so he had a stand mixer and fryer handy.

“The attention I received online was fast growing and spread around the city a lot quicker than I would have expected. I gained 2,000 followers in just one month. I decided to dedicate myself full-time to [Joosie Sweets Donuts] because of the high demand I was receiving with everyone wanting to try them.” Fast forward a few months and Joosie Sweets Donuts now has over 8,000 followers on Instagram!

The delicious donuts we taste today haven’t been without their struggles. Jess spent a lot of time learning the process, getting used to the prep routines in the morning before the first pick up, perfecting the dough and troubleshooting. She works 10-12 hours a day in the kitchen, plus another 2 hours online responding to order requests.

You can choose from over 35 delicious flavours, including her classics like Strawberry Cheesecake, Reese’s Pieces or Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or her seasonal selection, including this month’s features of Lemon Raspberry, Pina Colada or Salted Caramel. “The flavours I create mostly come from me, some inspirations from Pinterest, and other donut shops. I have a sweet tooth so I just think of flavours and toppings that would taste good together and go from there.” The donuts retail 6 for $20 or 12 for $35.
