“If you build it…they will come.” This is the core message from a very well-known film that captures the wonder and excitement of playing a sport that you love in a perfect setting. For those who have had this experience, they remember everything about their surroundings – the sights, the sounds, the feel of the ground – it is engrained in their memories forever. Brantford is fortunate to have such a facility in its Kiwanis Field.
Located on three acres of land behind Pauline Johnson Collegiate & VS, Kiwanis Field started off as a dream that quickly caught the attention of the community. With funding commitments from the Kiwanis Club of Brantford, the Grand Erie District School Board and the City of Brantford, the dream to build a multi-purpose all-weather outdoor sport field began. And after additional donations from local businesses and a successful fundraising campaign, the dream finally became a reality when it held its official Grand Opening on June 25, 2016.
Kiwanis Field is Brantford’s first state-of-the-art, multi-purpose athletic facility with a full size CFL synthetic turf playing field and an 8-lane rubberized track as its focal point. Rounding out the facilities other features are two long jump pits, two shot put areas and one high jump approach with plans for the future to build a throws area for discus and shot put. The location also has a field house, electronic scoreboard, bleacher seating for 750 and lights for nighttime games. It is quickly becoming one of the best locations in the region for hosting track and field competitions as well local high school sports.
Special Olympics Ontario Brantford worked with the organizers to help them understand the needs that local athletes with disabilities require and Kiwanis Field is now a place for these remarkable athletes to learn and train in their respective sports. Special Olympics Ontario Brantford has since held many regional invitational track and field meets and looks forward to many more great events to showcase this sporting jewel that the city of Brantford has to offer.
