There are many people in the community who are keeping us safe and moving forward. Our doctors, nurses, grocery store staff and all frontline workers are very visible and doing so much for the community. But let’s also acknowledge another group of people that have become lifelines to those who cannot leave their homes as well as a suggested way to recognize them and say thank you.
During this time of social distancing and limits on public gatherings and interactions, a very unique aspect has arisen that has been making a big difference to many who are not able to leave their homes. Whether one is self quarantining, has small children or is part of a vulnerable sector, getting out and about in the community can become difficult. As a result, there are very kind and helpful family and friends who take on shopping and running errands for people who are unable to leave their homes. These people are affectionately known as Porch Droppers.
For months, Porch Droppers have been gathering items to safely bring to those who need that extra help. They leave the items on the front porch and sometimes share a kind and friendly word through the closed door or go on their way as they move on to the next home. Whether its groceries, household items or even the furnace filter you forgot to buy, “Porch Droppers” and “porch dropping” have now become part of our new vocabulary. Going that extra mile to help someone out has become the ultimate show of care and love.
An extra way to thank Porch Droppers for their helpfulness can also help the local business community. Why not keep a stash of small denomination gift cards from local businesses inside your front door so you are always at the ready to thank your Porch Dropper. Whether it’s a gift card to a local garden centre, butcher, coffee shop, bakery, retail shop or fresh farm store, it’s a kind way to thank those helpful people while supporting the local economy.
So let’s all salute these great people who take on extra tasks to help out their family, neighbours and friends. They help us out of the goodness of their hearts. Thank you Porch Droppers, you’ve helped us all when we needed it the most.
