Earlier this month, we asked one of our favourite local Facebook Groups – Food-to-Go Brantford/Brant & Area – where they go to get their favourite pub food, and what their favourite menu items are. What is pub grub? In its most basic form, it is food that you can order from a pub (typically western European in origin). For the purposes of this write-up, we expand “pub grub” as comfort food and snacks served in substantial quantities that pairs well with a cold beer.
Like many other travelers, we trust the locals when they tell us our favourites; if you’re looking for the best pub grub in Brantford, here are the top three “pub grub” hotspots the locals recommend, as well as other mentions that serve up delicious comfort food you don’t want to miss:
Roxy’s Tap & Grill | 214 King George Road | 519-304-5200 / 226-387-1098 (takeout)
Roxy’s Tap & Grill is a friendly neighbourhood pub that serves homemade dishes that are well-loved by the locals. Trish Campbell is partial to their locally-sourced wings (either dry dusted or sauced) and homemade soups (the Broccoli Cheddar is a local favourite), but every menu item she’s tried has been top notch. Plus, all their portions are huge and their prices are very reasonable. If you’re looking for some traditional pub food, they also serve their delicious Liver and Onions dish that local Barrie Porter recommends. Order from Roxy’s online or by calling 226-387-1098 for takeout on Fridays from 12-8pm during the provincial lockdown. Follow Roxy’s Tap & Grill on Facebook.
The Duke on Park | 505 Park Road North | 519-304-6696
The Duke On Park is a local pub that offers traditional British fare, “pub grub” and daily specials. All of their British pub food is delicious, and both Yvonne Morrison and Michelle Olivia say their house beer-battered, deep fried fish and chips can’t be beat. Michelle Giffen recommends their burgers, curry fries and poutines, too. You can even get their British Poutine with cheese curds, slowly roasted braised beef, and Patak’s curry sauce on a bed of criss-cut fries. Wash down your pub grub order with draught beer to go – they offer 64 oz Gowlers filled with your favourite brews. Their menu is extensive, and you can even order easily online through their own app for takeout (Sunday to Thursday, 4-8pm and Friday to Saturday from 4-10pm); they even offer free delivery from Friday to Sunday from 4-8pm. If you’d prefer, they also offer delivery through Uber Eats and Skip the Dishes. Follow the Duke On Park on Facebook.
Sammy’s Rec Room | 10 Mount Pleasant Street | 519-720-0000
Open 7 days a week, this locally-owned restaurant is well-known for their classic comfort foods and huge wraps – some of the local favourites are their steak fajita wrap and their chicken Caesar wrap, which Bev Atkinson Haydon says in the best in town. If you want a little bit (or a lot) of everything, order the “Cardiac Platter” to share with your family. This platter is only $14.99 and includes a mountain of wings, chicken fingers, nachos, fries and deep fried pickle spears. Even hungrier? Order The “Double D” ($23.99) which is the Cardiac Platter with even larger servings, plus cheese sticks and breaded shrimp. We hear their Chocolate Lava Cake is great for dessert, and their menu also says they have Deep-Fried Snickers bars, so… start the car! Follow Sammy’s Rec Room on Facebook and Instagram.
