Culture Days on the Trails

Join us for Culture Days on the Trails on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the SC Johnson Trail, starting at the Hardy Road parking lot and ending at Lafayette Avenue. Twelve artists comprised of painters, musicians and dancers will be performing at this year's event.

Event Details

Attendees are invited to walk along a 2.6 km stretch of the SC Johnson Trail between the Hardy Road parking lot and Lafayette Avenue and attend twelve free mini-concerts and performances. Find additional event details below.

Parking
Parking will be available at the parking lot on Hardy Rd. and at the lower parking lot of Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant. On-street parking is also available on Parkside Drive, between Dufferin Avenue and Preston Boulevard. View the online map. Nearby residents are encouraged to bike or walk to the event.
Rain Date
The rain date for this event is Sunday, September 22, 2024. 
Washrooms
Three portable washrooms will be located along the trail.
Refreshments

Altitude Coffee Roasters will be on-site at the lower parking lot of Glenhyrst Art Gallery with their full service coffee shop trailer.

 Alicia-Lynn Morin - Painter

Alicia-Lynn is a second generation Cree Artist from Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan who now resides in Brantford. Alicia-Lynn will be live painting.

 Calm Canopy - Musician

Calm Canopy is the solo project of Paris, Ontario based producer and recording artist Mike Papaloni. He writes in a style that he calls "Optimist-core indie rock", generally optimistic sounding, upbeat pop/rock with some jazz influences that bleed out into the guitar work. His newest album "Optimist Park" is a collection of 9 songs that explore how we deal with our past, love, anxiety attacks, and questioning the status-quo. It was recorded, produced and mixed entirely from Mike's home studio in Paris, ON.

Chris Strei - Musician

Chris Strei is a Brantford-born and raised singer/songwriter with an original style that's been compared to Tragically Hip, Chris Stapleton, and Tom Petty, with lyrics that sing about perseverance until the darkness becomes light. Chris is a full-time musician performing in various restaurants and festivals in Southern Ontario with a list of covers that tastefully compliment his list of originals.

David A. Moses - Musician

Singer, songwriter, TV/radio broadcaster, and Emcee David A. Moses was most recently the host of Compelling Conversations on CKRZ 100.3FM and the host of ELMNT FM's flagship daily talk show program “Moment of Truth”(2018-2022). David is of Lenape (Delaware) Turtle Clan from Six Nations and also shares a Welsh heritage. In 2003, David recorded a demo song called “The Monkey Dog” based on a true Six Nations’ story, it was an instant hit and received write ups in the local papers plus a full page of the entertainment section of the Brantford Expositor. David released a 5 song EP in 2022 and in 2023 the single "Reclamation Blues" that made it to #17 on the Indigenous Music Countdown. Visit www.davidamoses.ca 

James Wilson - Musician

James N. Wilson is a Mohawk and French-Canadian Singer-Songwriter Musician from Six Nations of The Grand River. He has performed his music all around North America sharing the stage with many artists such as K-OS, Derek Miller, Logan Staats, DJ Shub, and many more. His original music has been compared to artists such as Dave Matthews, Shawn Mendes, and Coldplay. In December 2019, his song “City Lights” hit #1 on the IMC Indigenous Music Countdown. He released his second album "Alive" in 2024 which is available now on all streaming platforms.

Jay Patel - Musician

Jay Patel plays the keyboard, drums, dholak, tabla, harmonica, banjo, and more. He will be performing instrumental songs on keyboard.

Paromita Kar - Dancer

Paromita Kar is a dancer, choreographer, and the first in Canada to hold a PhD in Dance Studies (2014, Department of Dance, York University). A performer of numerous world dance styles, she attributes her core training in dance to classical
Indian Odissi dance. Paromita was introduced to Central Asian dance styles in 2008. Today, she is an award-winning fulltime performer of dances of Afghan, Tajik, Uzbek and Iranian heritages and is the choreographer and lead dancer of
Ensemble Topaz. She has performed in Canada, United States, Czech Republic, Netherlands and India, and has been supported by Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. In this performance and presentation, Paromita will share  dance stories and performances, choreographed by master teachers from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well as from her repertoire of Afghan dances, and also provide cultural and contextual information about these dance forms, the rich costumes and accessories. The performance includes the jug dance of Uzbekistan's Bukhara region (gateway to the historic Silk Road), and several dances of Central Asia inspired by nature.

Patti Giroux - Painter

Patti Giroux, an acrylic artist on canvas, draws inspiration from simple lines, easy colors, nature, and architecture. Exploring new series in her unique style, she has pioneered Pet Pop Art, crafting custom pieces from pet photos. With a background in Art Administration and Art Conservation, Patti is renowned for her ability to recreate textures and designs. Her extensive collection of photos, ranging from cemeteries to flowers and buildings, serves as references for her current art. A fun fact about Patti: she possesses the rare talent of painting with both her left and right hands simultaneously.

Piano Escape - Musicians

Classical pianist brothers Eric and Stuart Eigler created Piano Escape in 2020. They brought a bit of normalcy during the COVID lockdowns, by performing on their keyboard on their driveway to their neighbours. They gave another ten
similar shows over the years since. Each of them started piano lessons when they were turning three, and have continued their training. They performed several times on stage at the Sanderson Centre with the Brantford Music Club. In 2022, they were part of the Brantford Community Symphony Orchestra Christmas concert in Waterford. For the 2022-2023 season, Eric and Stuart were named Young Emerging Artists by the Arcady Ensemble, starring in two more full concerts.

Curtis Kagige aka. REDSKYBREAKS/B-BOY REDSKY of Wikwemikong First Nation, Sudbury grew up watching hip-hop, martial arts films, and 90s generation B-Boys.

Rising Hedons - Musicians
Founded in Taichung City, Taiwan in 2007 by bandleader Bradley Tindall, the ensemble has been heralded as a genre-twisting phenomenon by media and fans alike, and have performed hundreds of concerts all over the world; from the Yi-Lan Folk Festival in Taiwan, to the Bowery Poetry Club in New York and Spring Scream in Kenting, Taiwan. Equal parts thoughtful storytelling and reckless abandon, Rising Hedons' live shows are a truly captivating experience - ranging from the mesmerizing to the exhilarating, and all points in between. Their unique brand of entertainment fuses soaring violin, earth-shattering percussive guitar, wall thumping double bass and the unpredictable soul of a Rock & Roll band.

Sumeda Mongia - Dancer

Sumedha is an Indo-Canadian dance artist. She started dancing at the age of 5, though formal training in Indian classical dance (Odissi) started later, she continued her learning at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Delhi under Guru Madhavi Mudgal. She has also enjoyed learning and performing different dance styles including semi-classical, folk, Indian contemporary, creative, bollywood etc. Sumedha has always been passionate about building communities through dance. Since moving to Canada, she has collaborated with a few prominent artists in Canada and has performed at prestigious events.

Culture Days is a national celebration of arts and culture. From September 20 to October 13, 2024, millions of people will attend thousands of free participatory arts and culture events across the country both in-person and online.
